The Program Management Office of the National Security Agency oversees the Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) program. CMU achieved the CAE designation in 2021. A requirement to maintain the designation is that designated institutions must contribute to the CAE Community. Mentor candidate schools prior to the submission of their applications and peer-reviewing candidate institutions following the submission of their applications count as contributions to the CAE Community. The work requires significant resources that include time, attendance to virtual meetings, and travel to CAE training events.
