Activity: MembershipMembership of committee

Description

Threads Fashion is a non-profit organization that supports learning and the arts while advocating for a number of marginalized groups. The proceeds of this event go to a number of charitable causes that support the local community. Some examples include a local women’s shelter, the Humane Animal Treatment Society (HATS), Fashion Against Violence, Girls on the Run, Clothing Inc., Art Prize, and Toys for Tots. Students are required to reflect on this event and the way their service to Threads Fashion contributes to the good of the community.

This event gives students from across the university the opportunity for real-life experiences outside of the classroom and at the same time a chance to engage with the local communityand beyond. Some of the University disciplines involved in the event include Fashion Merchandising, Interior Design, Nutrition and Dietetics, Event Management, and Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts.

The students in FNS 261 SL Foodservice Catering for Events volunteer their time and work to make Threads Fashion show a successful event by catering the VIP reception prior to the show. The students work planning the menu and serving the food helps Threads Fashion reduce the cost of executing the show while increasing the money generated and available for charitable donations. In addition, students reflect on the way the event is catered and the impact their choices have on communitysustainability.
