Building on the past two years of successful professional development experiences for twenty-six (26) literacy and science teachers during our Beaver Island Institutes, the Towle Professorship would allow Dr. Hicks the opportunity to visit three pairs of participants in their classrooms in Fall 2018. While surveys immediately following the institute have shown positive impacts on participants, the ability to observe teachers in their classrooms and to collect additional qualitative data would confirm whether or not this immersive, sustained professional development experience has long-term effects on their abilities to integrate science, literacy and technology-rich teaching practices, as outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards.
