“Alternative Maternal-Fictions: Hedwig Dohm and Gabriele Reuter“

    Abstract

The process of creating alternative maternal figures already begins with the more sentimental writings of E.Marlitt in the 1860’s and culminates in the scathing critical depiction of generational conflict in Dohm’s trilogy Schicksale einer Seele, Sibilla Dalmar and Christa Ruland as well as Gabriele Reuter’s Aus guter Familie and Das Tränenhaus. My presentation highlights both the critical depiction of motherhood in these works, as well as focus on the alternative maternal-figures.
