Abstract
Monsters are cultural constructions that tell us who we imagine we are, what we hope we are not, and what we are afraid we might ourselves become. This chapter considers four insistently recurring subcategories of monstrosity that define the American experience: the monster as cultural other, the numinous monster, the monster as human invention, and the natural monster.
