N1 - Funding Information:
This study introduces ESOTA® and summarises the Gaziantep IS Project which was implemented in Gaziantep, Turkey. This project which was supported by the Silkroad Development Agency through the Attraction Centers Program of the Ministry of Development was carried out by the Gaziantep Chamber of Industry. In the context of this project, 2012 industrial companies from 166 different industrial sectors were screened for IS opportunities, thus circular industrial production, by using a methodology involving ESOTA®.
Funding Information:
This project was funded by the Silkroad Development Agency through the Attraction Centers Program of the Ministry of Development (Protocol No: TRC1/15/CFDR/003). The Ministry of Development, Silkroad Development Agency, Gaziantep Chamber of Industry and Teknocev Muhendislik are acknowledged for their contributions to this study.
Funding Information:
ESOTA® was used in several projects for IS opportunity match-making such as ‘OSTIM IS Project’ funded by the Republic of Turkey, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization, ‘Gaziantep IS Project’ funded by the Silkroad Development Agency through the Attraction Centers Program of the Ministry of Development, and “Developing Green OIZ Framework for Turkey”, which was funded by the World Bank Group.

N2 - Implementation of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is still a challenge, especially when the number of collaborators is high. In addition to the lack of information, there is a need to develop new and innovative techniques and tools to screen IS opportunities for any system independent of its scale. This study presents a methodology to determine IS opportunities using ESOTA®. ESOTA® is an IS match-making platform, based on relationship mimicking and was used as the main tool to analyse and determine IS opportunities. A case study was carried out in Gaziantep (Turkey) and 2012 companies from 166 different sectors were analysed to identify IS opportunities. Then, the sectors and IS opportunities were prioritised based on the results from ESOTA® and feedback from the stakeholders. The outcomes covered a range of benefits, such as, energy and material recovery/reuse, waste recycling/reuse, which all addressed to considerable reduction in GHG emissions in a regional industrial zone.
