Abstract

A high-precision magnetometer based on a miniature Penning trap was developed to support Penning trap mass spectrometry of rare isotopes. Magnetic field monitoring with a relative precision of 2 parts in 108 with a temporal resolution of 15 min was demonstrated. The use of this magnetometer at the Low-Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) facility at Michigan State University will virtually eliminate the need to perform reference measurements during on-line mass measurements of rare isotopes and allow for the best use of precious on-line measurement time.
