Abstract
The technique of a triple-analyzer Mass Spectrometer for MS/MS work is described. The high resolution capability of the first two analysers enables separation of parent ions with similar nominal mass but different elemental composition. These preselected parent ions undergo a collisional induced decomposition. The reactions observed are characteristic for the structure of the parent ions. The high specificity and speed of this method makes it ideal for mixtures which cannot be separated by GC/MS or LC/MS. Moreover it may replace separation procedures in certain cases.
