Abstract
Health care literature is replete with discussions of today's nurse shortage. Interestingly, the shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in this country is responsible for one of nurses' main complaints: that because of greater patient loads, they are unable to render high-quality patient care. Other occupational groups also experience dissatisfaction when their work loads increase because of the RN shortage. The resulting diminished job satisfaction rears its ugly head in the form of lessened commitment to the job and increased employee absenteeism.
