Explanatory Narratives: Brigandage

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Rich archival material shows that local civic leaders and French officials arrived at different understandings of the causes for the events. Examining in parallel the threads that wove these two narratives of causality sheds light on the train of thought of French officials who selected, from the available evidence, the building blocks of the official theory of causality. The goal of the public narrative was to validate French imperial intentions for the area and the French presence in Italy more generally.
