Abstract

Friendship is one major indicator of prosocial behavior. It has many benefits, and many researchers argue that girls are more prosocial than boys. Young children develop and learn in the context of relationships. The focus of this research is to investigate if there are the differences between the meaning of friendship for 3 and 4-year-old boys and girls. The study focused on an analysis of investigating if their differences between young girls and boys meaning of friendship. The setting of the study was the Child Development and Learning Lab at University in Midwest American city. This study used a qualitative, ethnographic research and is IRB approved. The data collection included a warm-up task (drawing), a story comprehension task, and an open-ended interview. The results of this investigation pointed to that the similarities between girls and boys lay in the finding that they both value helping and playing together as necessary components for friendship. For both genders, friends MAKE YOU HAPPY. However, girls focus more on feelings, caring, hugging, protection and compassion as necessary dimensions of friendship. For boys, friends take part in the physical actions of doing stuff together and playing blocks, making jokes, catching Pokémon, playing on a tumble matt. For both genders, friends could be playmates, family members or toys, but none of the children gave the name of a teddy bear, a doll, dog or cat as a friend. Most of the girls indicated they had 2 friends and boys 1friend. Even though for both genders time spent together (as friends are around, always with you, are forever) solidifies friendship.
