Abstract
This article presents the many-faceted transformations of the figure of Hermes in Ancient Greece, late-ancient Egypt, and the Muslim world. Hermes is a messenger, inventor of the kithara (the ancestor of the guitar), magician, and mystical master (in the Sufi tradition). This article delineates these multiple functions and suggests a unifying thread among them in the Great Work of transformation and the art of communication essential to that transformation.
