Abstract

The impact of recession of the Thermal Protection System (TPS) on the ORION Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) Aerodynamics is analyzed. A combination of high fidelity CFD, off line TPS analysis, and engineering approximations are used to estimate the impact of recession on the aerodynamics of the CEV. Specifically, the impact of the shape change due to recession on the trim angle of attack and the resultant change in vehicle L/D are investigated.
