Abstract

This chapter examines culturally relevant education (CRE) within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education, with an emphasis on gateway courses. We discuss the need to incorporate CRE, which is made up of critical pedagogy, culturally relevant pedagogy, and culturally responsive teaching within STEM gateway courses. We then provide a framework for its inclusion in STEM gateway courses and, finally, offer practical examples for faculty teaching these courses.
