Abstract

During an era of Native American education reform, the Social Studies Education Department of the University of Georgia, the flagship university of a state with no registered Native American tribes, won a federal grant to help “Indians teach Indians.” This examination of an episode in the history of social studies education at UGA will describe the unique grant proposal and compare it to the experience of the Native American participants. Insights about the successes and failures, along with what can be learned from this teacher education program, are also examined.
