Abstract

The design of an improved TM//0//1//0-mode cavity for measuring the microwave breakdown characteristics of gases is discussed. The evaluation of the field distribution within the cavity, which contains an axially placed quartz tube and deformable end-wall diaphragm, is described. The operation of the cavity is tested using helium gas. The breakdown characteristic of the helium-oxygen mixture used in diving is measured as a function of pressure.
