Platform for virtual prototyping of advanced distribution management systems using python and OpenDSS

Abstract

Successfully realizing the potential benefits offered by advanced distribution management systems (DMS) and distribution automation (DA) depends greatly on the ability to model and simulate these controls at the system planning and design stage. To demonstrate and quantify the benefits of these types of assessments, the System Control Interface (SCI) module was developed working with OpenDSS to create a "sandbox" simulation platform. This platform permits existing or potential advanced distribution controls to be quickly modeled and assessed using actual system planning models. This paper provides an overview of the SCI module and an illustrative example application for an innovative Volt/VAR Optimization algorithm incorporating distributed energy resources (DER).
