Abstract

Very high real-space resolution atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) were obtained from a series of Cax/2AlxSi1-xO2 glasses with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.67. This was accomplished by using the high fluxes of high-energy x rays available at third generation synchrotron x-ray sources. As a result, it was possible to resolve the different Si-O and Al-O bonds at r = 1.60 angstrom and r = 1.75 angstrom, and to study the Si-O and Al-O coordination polyhedra independently.
