Abstract

One reason for the difficulties encountered by students when studying for an examination in sociology is that they have forgotten many of the very basic concepts that underlie the skills they are expected to demonstrate. In addition many students are too intimidated or anxious to meaningfully engage in traditional review activities before examinations. The classroom activity described here is designed to serve as a refresher of basic concepts for students preparing for final exams. Adapted from the popular drinking game Beer-Pong, this activity allows teams of students to work together to answer questions on basic concepts chosen from the topics covered during the semester. The results of this study indicate that playing SOC-Pong has a positive effect on exam performance in sociology. SOC-Pong is a useful tool for initiating the exam review process by preparing students in an atmosphere that is engaging, cooperative, competitive and fun.
