Abstract
Developing quality leaders is critical to the success of every organization. Unfortunately, high performing quality leaders do not materialize in an organization overnight. Instead, they must develop over time with proper training and support. This article discusses the strategic importance of individual development plans (IDPs) and suggests an alternative use for team development. Past research (e.g. Pellet, 2008) indicates that organizations that employ performance management tactics, like IDPs, are more likely to outperform their competitors on both financial measures and non-financial measures, like customer satisfaction and service quality.
