Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Malaria infection is prevalent among children and leads to thousands of death globally. The objective of our review was to investigate the effectiveness and efficacy of Vaccine Mosquirix in reducing the number of P. falciparum malaria cases among pediatric populations.

Method: We conducted a systematic interventional review and selected randomized controlled trials from the Cochrane Central, PubMed, TRIP, Web of Science, and CINAHL. Two researchers screened the titles, abstracts, and then full papers and extracted the data independently. Data were analyzed using a random effect model and presented as forest plots.

Results: Overall, we included 12 randomized clinical trials in the analysis, representing a total of 14,856 participants. Evidence was of a moderate to a high quality using the GRADE scale. The risk of clinical malaria episodes was 45 per 1000 after vaccination, which was 18% lower in the vaccinated group compared to the insecticide-treated bed-netting and non-malaria comparator vaccines. (95%CI 0.75-0.91, I2=74%, moderate quality). The adverse events due to vaccination were 16% lower in the vaccinated group compared to insecticide-treated bed-netting and non-malaria comparator vaccines. (0.84, 95%CI 0.79-0.90, I2=69%, high quality) and was reported in 200 per 1000 cases. The efficacy of the vaccine was in the range of 15 to 64%.

Conclusion: Malaria vaccine candidate Mosquirix is an effective vaccine for reducing cases of clinical malaria in endemic populations.

Keywords: Mosquirix, vaccine, Systematic review, Children and Infants
