Abstract
Drawing on previous studies of synecdoche regarding public controversies, I consider how opponents of criminal justice reform magnify threats with emotional appeals based on stigma to evaluate arguments based on fear. I close the paper by theorizing ways in which rhetorical critics might respond with arguments drawing on metaphor and dialectic to generate a more compassionate and rational consideration of policy regarding reentry for formerly incarcerated persons.
