Abstract
In the past 45 years, the value of large performance ensembles has increasingly come under attack in music education as narrow in purpose, non-inclusive, autocratic, and formal. Research of conducting instead evidences a healthy range of democratic, informal, collaboratively-interdependent, and musician-independent purposes, settings, pedagogical methods, and ‘school of thought’ perspectives.
