Understanding of the Foundations of Competitive Advantages: A Case of Boeing in the Global Aerospace Industry

Abstract

Understanding how to build and sustain long-term competitive advantages for the business is one of the most frequently addressed research topics in the strategic management field. This article focuses on the foundations of Boeing's competitive advantages in the Global Aerospace Industry, utilized ‘Building Blocks of Competitive Advantages,’ a strategic analytical approach to analyze the foundations of competitive advantages. To explore the foundations of Boeing's competitive advantages, a wide variety of literature was assembled to inform this article as an exploratory approach. Boeing undoubtedly draws superior strengths from its innovation-focus, customer-focus, and focus-efficiency to build and sustain its competitive advantage. However, at Boeing, quality-focus is more of an internal weakness, and it is an area of need-improvement. The paper provides useful hints for strategy managers to delineate their competitive advantage and devise sustainability strategies.
