Political and economic liberalization in much of Eastern Europe has led to the opening of importantpotential markets for U.S. hospitality firms. These markets vary, however, in investment opportunities and climate across individual Eastern Euro pean countries. This article examines the state of U.S. hospitality investment in six major Eastern European countries. Recent developments that have led to the present economic and political climate in these countries are discussed, and the major U.S. hospitality firms doing business in these countries, country-specific investment requirements, and potential opportunities for new investment are identified. Understanding the unique characteristics of each market is critically important to U.S. hospitality managers considering expansion into the markets of Eastern Europe.
