Whatnots is a musical film that incorporates 13 songs written in the spring of 2014. The music is based in the traditional storytelling style of folk but with influences of rock ‘n’ roll and 1960’s psychedelic overtones. The goal of the film is to match the tone of the songs and give a visual abstract representation of the feeling and thoughts expressed. The film can be broken down into 13 modules or simply put “music videos”. However, the whole is greater than its parts. The modules combined tell a story that is connected with an overall arc. Recurring themes, colors, patterns, animations and imagery provide a cohesive thread to aid to the overall assembly of the project. One might look at influences such as Pink Floyd’s The Wall or The Beatles Yellow Submarine as the direction headed. Each module represents a skillset I have acquired throughout my career as well as incorporates different collaboration efforts with industry professionals, colleagues and students. This creative endeavor has been completed and I applied to film festivals for the 2016-2017 cycles.
