Abstract

The Dictionary of Literary Biography (known as the DLB) began in 1978 and has become the world’s most comprehensive literary reference series in English. Library Journal has referred to it as the most important reference series in literary biography ever published. A DLB volume usually includes some 30 to 40 biographical and career summary essays or entries, ranging in length from 3,000 to 10,000 words, for a total of approximately 200,000 words per volume, not including illustrations. My work as editor for this project entailed creating the table of contents for the volume, identifying and inviting scholars to write entries, editing all entries at multiple stages of composition, researching and writing the scholarly introduction, writing some of the entries, editing all 26 entries that appeared, and reading and correcting proofs before the volume went to press. This volume is being published in January 2022 in both print and online formats.
